F-15E Strike Eagle Aviation Art Print, Low Fly Loch Ness, USAF Fighter Jet Wall Art, Fighter Pilot Gift

As misty low clouds cling to the hillsides and glimmers of light from the low morning sun break through, an F-15E from the 492nd Fighter Squadron swiftly glides over the glass-smooth, reflective waters of Loch Ness, adding a bit of thunder to an otherwise peaceful and majestic scene. Loch Ness, along with much of Scotland, lies within Low Fly Area (LFA) 14. Low Fly Areas provide military aircrews with airspace in which they can train at low altitude, in some locations descending to as low as 100 feet above the terrain or water. The rugged Highlands of Scotland were a favorite destination for fighter crews when the famously unpredictable weather cooperated. Mountains, valleys, lochs, rapidly changing terrain, and often challenging weather provided an exceptional environment in which crews could hone their low-altitude flying and navigation skills. Of course, not everyone on the ground appreciated the occasional interruption of jet noise. There was, however, at least one notable exception: a gentleman who lived within LFA 14 would occasionally call the F-15E squadrons at RAF Lakenheath and demand a little jet noise if it had been too long since a Strike Eagle had visited his part of the countryside. “Low Fly Loch Ness” depicts the Weapon Systems Officer’s (WSO’s) view from the back seat of an F-15E flying low over Loch Ness—a unique and memorable way to take in the spectacular scenery surrounding one of Scotland’s most famous waterways. No sign of Nessie today! The photograph that inspired this piece was taken by the artist while assigned to the 492nd Fighter Squadron.
