Upon return to base (RTB), fighter aircraft conduct what is known as a Battle Damage Check, or “BD Check.” The inspecting aircraft rejoins in close formation, moves beneath the other jet, and crosses to the opposite side, giving the crew a close visual look at the aircraft to ensure the jet and its weapons are undamaged and in good condition before approaching the airfield for recovery.

“Battle Damage Check” puts you in the cockpit during one of these close-formation inspections. From beneath the F-15E, you can see the two lighter-colored War Reserve Materiel external fuel tanks; four 500-pound GBU-12 Paveway II laser-guided bombs carried on the left conformal fuel tank hardpoints; and two 2,000-pound GBU-31A JDAM GPS-guided bombs, with one carried on the centerline station and the other on the right conformal fuel tank.

Also visible are the aircraft’s chaff and flare dispensers, located just aft of the LITENING targeting pod, along with the LANTIRN terrain-following radar pod mounted beneath the intake.

The unusual perspective captures a view of the Strike Eagle normally seen only by another aircrew—close aboard, beneath the aircraft, during the final checks before heading home.
