In early March 2002, F-15E Strike Eagles of the 335th Fighter Squadron “Chiefs” participated in Operation Anaconda, providing close air support (CAS) and precision strikes for U.S. forces fighting to clear the Shah-i-Kot Valley of al-Qaeda and Taliban forces.

During one of the largest battles involving U.S. forces and al-Qaeda and Taliban fighters since Tora Bora, 335th crews delivered precision-guided munitions and conducted 20mm strafing attacks against enemy positions throughout the valley. Their missions included support during the fierce fighting on Takur Ghar on March 4, during what became known as the Battle of Roberts Ridge. Two 335th pilots and two Weapon Systems Officers were subsequently awarded Silver Stars for their actions that day.

“Operation Anaconda” depicts an F-15E from the 335th Fighter Squadron over Afghanistan’s Shah-i-Kot Valley after delivering all six Mk-82 500-pound bombs carried on its left conformal fuel tank. Four GBU-12 500-pound laser-guided bombs remain on the right conformal fuel tank. Visible on the left side of the aircraft’s nose is the incomplete “For Liberty and Justice” nose art—a distinctive detail from this period in the aircraft’s operational history. Together, these details capture the heavily armed Strike Eagles and demanding close-air-support missions flown by the Chiefs during Operation Anaconda.
