The legendary F-15E Strike Eagle has long been the “Warhorse” of the USAF fighter fleet. The first F-15Es became operational on September 30, 1989. Less than a year later, on August 12, 1990—just ten days after Iraqi forces invaded Kuwait—Strike Eagles deployed to the Persian Gulf.

In the decades since, F-15Es have maintained a near-constant presence in the skies over the Middle East and Southwest Asia. They have enforced no-fly zones, provided armed overwatch for U.S. and allied forces, and delivered tremendous amounts of precision-guided ordnance during combat operations. For more than 37 years, the F-15E Strike Eagle has truly earned its reputation as the “Warhorse” (and Workhorse) of American combat air power.

The photo that this piece is based on was taken by USAF Staff Sgt. Lee O. Tucker over Iraq in 2004 as part of a combat camera shoot while the 492nd Fighter Squadron was deployed in the region.
